Ushers

Job Title: Usher

Qualifications

  • Ability to maintain a pleasant, courteous attitude with the parishioners.
  • Roman Catholic in good standing with the Church.

Term Length

  • Term: 1 year
  • Time Commitment: 1 Hour per Week (1 mass), Sometimes 2 hours if special mass.

Requirements

Responsibilities:

  • Follow the directions of the Usher Captain.
  • Before mass
    • Arrive 10 minutes before mass begins.
    • Open the doors for parishioners. Be pleasant with everyone who arrives at church.
    • Assist the handicapped as necessary to their seats.
    • Provide assistance to all who ask.
  • During mass
    • Help people find a seat when the church is crowded.
    • Work with the Usher Captain to take up the collection.
    • Provide security for the collection.
  • After mass
    • Prop open the inner doors. Prop open the outer doors if weather is pleasant.
    • Pass out the bulletins.
    • Close all doors before departing.
  • Emergency Responders
    • Ushers are the first responders to any emergency.
    • The Usher Captain coordinates the situation.
      • Medical Emergency
        • Go to the person and assess the situation. Keep people from crowding the person with the medical emergency.
        • Call 911. (There is a phone in the vesting sacristy - dial 9-911)
        • One usher needs to go outside to meet the ambulance and escort the paramedics to the person in need of help.
      • Fire / Bomb / Physical Damage
        • Assess the situation.
        • Call 911. (There is a phone in the vesting sacristy – dial 9-911)
        • If the building needs to be evacuated, the ushers watch the doors to be sure everyone leaves the building safely. Assist any handicapped to exit the building. The ushers and priest are the last to leave the building after it is confirmed the building is empty.
  • Assist the Usher Captain if any special assistance is needed during mass.
