- Saturday: 4:00pm – 7:15pm or Sunday: 7:00am – 1:15pm
- Saturday 3:30pm-7:15pm if cleaning up after a wedding
Requirements
- Completed 8th Grade
- Member of St. Jude the Apostle Parish
- Has been involved with another ministry (youth group, altar server) for at least one year.
- Catholic in Good Standing. Confirmed Catholic if older than 18.
- Enrolled in religious education or Catholic school if in High School.
Responsibilities
- Initial Setup
- Saturday
- Clean up after wedding if necessary.
- Remove flowers from pews.
- Sweep up any dirt / flower peddles from main isle.
- Remove any leftover programs from pews.
- Rearrange Mother’s Chapel and vestibule.
- DO NOT remove any flowers in the sanctuary. Leave them for mass.
- Make sure heat/air is on in the vesting sacristy and Mother’s Chapel.
- Turn on lights and sound system.
- Place key in main church tabernacle.
- Check all lectionaries, sacramentaries, and the Book of the Gospel to be sure they are set to the proper Sunday. (You can determine the proper setting from the calendar in the main sacristy.)
Place an opened corporal on the altar (if missing.)
Replace sanctuary candle if out. - A special wedding cleanup stipend will be given.

- Unlock preschool door.
- Make sure heat/air is on in the vesting sacristy and Mother’s Chapel.
- Turn on lights and sound system.
- Place key in main church tabernacle.
- Check the amount of oil in altar candles. Refill if less than ½ full.
- Replace sanctuary candle if out.
- Saturday
- Before Each Mass
- Place bulletins at the two side entrances (St. Jude Shrine and next to St. Jude Chapel) and main entrance (two small tables next to center isle and two tables in narthex (main entrance). Make sure 1/3 of all the bulletins put out (about 200 before the 4:30, 9:00 and 10:30 mass) are located at the St. Jude Shrine entrance.
- Check the tabernacle to determine how many consecrated hosts are present. (i.e.: ¾ full ciborium, 2 full ciborium, etc.)
- Fill up the large ciborium for the Offertory based on the communion count posted in the communion bread cupboard.
- Put large ciborium and full wine cruet on Offertory table.
- Place the Gospel book holder on the altar and place the Gospel book in the vesting sacristy.
- Make sure there is a lector and altar servers. If there are none, then go ask an altar server or lector in the congregation to help out at the mass. Make a note on the schedule if the altar server was missing and the person had no replacement.
- The Sacristan oversees that the following is done by the Altar Servers:
- Light the altar candles.
- Set up the credence table (listed from left to right)
- Finger towel, glass bowl and pitcher with water for hand washing
- Ciborium (count based on number of ciborium in the Tabernacle and number needed for the specific mass)
- Full water cruet
- Assembly chalices 1/2 full of wine mixed with water with purificators (if used at mass)
- Priest’s chalice with purificator
- Large Sacramentary
- After Each Mass
- Take all vessels to the sink for purification.
- Assist the priest or deacon with the purification of vessels.
- Place all dirty purificators and finger towels in “dirty linens” drawer.
- Check the condition of the church, rest rooms, and glass doors at the entrances.
- Pick up stray bulletins and trash
- Replace song books
- Put up kneelers
- Pick up trash in restrooms and clean up any mess.
- Add paper towels or toilet paper to restrooms if needed. (Found in janitors closet.)
- Wipe off glass doors if very messy.
- Pick up trash in entrance areas.
- Conclusion of the Day
- Saturday
- Put all cleaned vessels in safe.
- Put tabernacle key in safe.
- Turn off heat/air in vesting sacristy and Mother’s Chapel.
- Turn off the lights and sound system.
- Lock the church doors.
- Sunday
- Put all cleaned vessels in safe.
- Put tabernacle key in safe.
- Turn off heat/air in vesting sacristy and Mother’s Chapel.
- If there is no baptism:
- Turn off the lights and sound system.
- Lock the sacristies and church doors.
- If a baptism is scheduled:
- Remove baptismal font lid, set on floor away from baptismal font
- Place on the baptismal font: baptismal candles, one per child; sacred oils; finger towel, one per child; and baptismal rites book
- Light Easter candle
- Saturday
Special Instructions
- Call 9-911 if there is a medical emergency.
- Assist any visiting priest in knowing our procedures at St. Jude. (Location of vestments, the procedures for Communion, etc.)
- Report any unusual problems or broken items to a parish priest. If there is a visiting priest then leave a note in the office.
- If anyone approaches you with a question or request, courteously try to meet their request. If you don’t know the answer or can’t do what is being asked then take down their information and give it to one of the priest.
